Has anyone other than myself ever heard artificial sweeteners called "rat killer"?

I am guessing that the term refers to the fact that if you give rats enough artificial sweetener they will end up getting cancer and dying.

I personally use the word whenever I ask for artificial sweetener and all my friends including waitresses know what I am asking for but damned if I know where the word came from.
