        Ah.  I believe you are correct about the typo (and, of course, I share your doubts about the Shasta use).

        There is a 3/26/98 Google Groups post in alt.config, discussing the creation of a proposed alt.music.babybird newsgroup, in which the poster included "asshat #002" in his signature block.  Since this comes shortly before other Usenet postings using "asshat" or "ass hat" in music-related newsgroups, it's probably the earliest use available on Google Groups.
