P.S.  in rereading my just posted message, I realize I should have
been more explicit in invoking a Gricean analysis for why the
existence of a more specific term (here, "gay") restricts the
application of the more general term (here, "MSM") to the complement
of the cases to which the former applies--this is what I've called
Q-based narrowing (Q for a generalized version of Grice's first
quantity maxim) and applies in many cases, although the result in
some lexical items is actual polysemy, which arguably has occurred
with "animal".
