6 December 1895, STEVENS POINT DAILY JOURNAL (Stevens Point, Wisconsin),
pg. 1, col. 2:
   _A CONFIRMED DRUNKARD._
_A Pet Squirrel a Slave in King Alcohol._
"Joe" the tame squirrel in Mieding's drug store, whose antics are an
unfailing source of delight to the little folks and amusement to his older
admirers, is in disgrace and an inordinate desire for strong drink is the cause of his
downfall. He was introduced to the ways of civilization about four months
ago and his savage nature readily yielded to the blandishments of sugar,
imported nuts and fruits. There was nothing, in fact, he would not eat. In an evil
hour, like weak humanity, he was tempted and fell a victim to alcohol. The
stimulating effect was delightful and he jumped about his cage like an Indian on
a drunk. He suffered all the depressing effects of a "hang-over" but the
next day insisted on another "time." It was refused and he sulked like a child,
refusing to be humored by almonds or chesnuts. Now he must have his regular
eye-opener every morning or there is trouble. He takes about three fingers of
toddy without a breath and in a way that would put to blush any lusher in the
community. Alas, his untutored mind knows not the danger which lurks in the
cup and this savage of the forest is on the high road to ruin.

NUTCAKE

The OED Appeals List asks for "nutcake" before 1967. We've done quite a
few of these now.

CORRECTION ON "NO GOOD DEED GOES UNPUNISHED"

  I'd posted a Newspaperarchive.com thumbnail from 1949. I forgot that the
1949 CHRONICLE TELEGRAM is actually 1993. My error in forgetting that error.
