I found an email address for Prof. James Work, the 1970 author/complier, and
asked about his sources.

The suggested putative parallel of "dressed to the nines" doesn't help
explain, among other things, the yards.

If I recall correctly, it is more often objected about citations that they are
too far after the time and place of origin; it would perhaps be peculiar to
object that in this case the first citation is, in time as well as space, too
near.
