I've pushed it back a bit: _Current Slang_ (1967) lists it for 1964. I
still go for 'echoic' though; as I would for 'hughie' (usu. 'call for
hughie', 'buick', 'herb' (as in 'call for herb'), 'earl' (with inpit of
course from 'hurl') and such as 'barf', 'burk', 'woof', 'yuke', and 'ook'.
The finest example of such echoisms must be Connie Eble's inclusion in
Campus Slang (Mar. 1979): 'go to Europe with Ralph and Earl in a Buick.'
