North Dakota is part of the Linguistic Atlas of the Upper Midwest
Project, which was conducted by Harold Allen.  The field work was
conducted from 1947-57 and the atlas, which is in, I believe, three
volumes, comprising vocabulary, phonology, and syntax, was published
from 1973-76.
