Wall Street Journal from 1929.  An advertisment for a sale of men's
overcoats.

it!  Don't know the score right now, but here are the orginal opportunites:

Obviously this isn't a clearcut useage in a figurative sense, but it shows
how an ad copyrighter used the phrase--keeping score, as if in a game.

At least, that's my reading of it.
