In the verses that my mother taught me more than 50 years ago (her father was in the Army in WWI), the Marine ate the bean and "spit up" all over the submarine, and the little Marine went over the top to get himself a lollipop.  I think there was also verse with the punch line having something to do with washing the soldiers' underwear.
