WASHINGTON û Two Bush appointees ù Mr John Bolton and Mr John Negroponte, the White House's choice for ambassador to the United Nations and director of national intelligence respectively ù have come under intense scrutiny at Senate committees.
Democrats on the panels, while attacking these senior officials, singled out the manipulation of intelligence and diplomacy at the top levels of the administration to suit its interests.
A former American intelligence chief described Mr Bolton as a "kiss-up, kick-down sort of guy", who tried to bully government analysts into producing the intelligence he wanted. Mr Negroponte was accused of covering up human rights abuses when he was Washington's ambassador to Honduras.
