"Latins Are Lousy Lovers" (1936)

        "Latins Are Lousy Lovers" was the title of a famous essay by
that prolific author, Anonymous, in Esquire in the 1930s. Anonymous was
revealed to be Helen Brown Norden when it was reprinted in The Bedside
Esquire (1940).  I believe the essay was in the October 1936 issue; the
many references to 1939 appear to be the Internet's tribute to the ways
in which a single error can be reproduced wholesale, not that that
phenomenon is limited to the computer age.  This was the magazine that
was seized by Cuban police in 1936.

what Fred Shapiro has. In my experience--not that I have any experience,

An Esquire article of 1939 receives credit, but the phrase seems to
