Yet, instead of but ??

I have a friend who has begun to use "yet" to the exclusion of "but." I remember early on in her usage I saw the same thing in print; alas, I cannot remember where.

Am I correct that the two are not synonyms and this is a new (and confusing/irritating) usage?
