Not that it matters, but the structure of the Webster 1828 def. suggest to me that Noah had the transitive usein mind.

For recreate, Webster's 1828 gives "1. To refresh after toil; to reanimate,
as languid spirits or exhausted strength; to amuse or divert in weariness";
the American Heritage 2000 edition gives "To take recreation"; WordNet 2
gives "play, recreate -- (engage in recreational activities rather than
work; occupy oneself in a diversion; "On weekends I play"; "The students all
