Yellow Taxi (1909)

No help, of course, but before 1965 or '66 NYC cabs came in various colors. At that time yellow was standardized to help distinguish medallion cabs from "gypsies," for which yellow was proscribed.

Taxi Cabs Might Be Redesigned
The Design Trust for Public Space is working with the Taxi and Limousine Commission to see new designs for taxi cabs, to celebrate 100 years of taxi cabs in 2007.

Does anyone have anything for the "yellow" origin? Were the first taxis red?
