baseball "stuff" (1905)

Mark Liberman at the Language Log has a post about "stuff" in baseball,
usually referring to the spin that a pitcher is able to put on a ball:

I contributed examples back to 1905.  Interestingly, I also found examples
from the same era referring to the spin that a *batter* puts on the ball.

Can anyone take it back earlier?
