This phrase seems to be a common substitution for self-deprecation. It
gets over 15,000 hits on Google, when you search for "self depreciation"
-deprecation.

It's listed in yourdictionary.com as "Disparagement or undervaluation of
oneself and one's abilities."

Example 1:
The small family-owned company did not believe it was at fault; besides,
footing the bill would have put the company out of business altogether.
The tiny supplier pulled itself out of the jam by practising the art of
self-depreciation. Its secret was playing up its own vulnerability and
appealing to the strength and noble character of the giant automobile
customer.

Example 2:
Maybe you are extremely critical of yourself, or be afraid to try
anything new. Maybe you minimize your successes with comments like, "I
was just lucky" or "Anybody could have done that". This kind of self
depreciation is not accidental; nor does it materialize out of nowhere,
suddenly as a symptom. It reflects conditioning in the past.
Unfortunately, low self-esteem is most often programmed unintentionally
by judgmental parents or role models.
