Jints = Giants (Cuban 1889, NY 1908)

I've always (i.e., since the '50s) thought that "Jints" was pronounced  /dgaInts/. In other words, like a one-syllable "Giants,"  presumably the pronunciation of the less refined classes.

I'll go further. /dgInts/ is a sight-pronunciation and therefore laughable in the perspective of sober, objective linguists. Ha ha ha !  " /dgInts/ ! "  Kids today !

and sometimes we, or they, say it with a spelling pronunciations, to
rhyme with "hints" rather than (as intended) "pints". It took me a
while to figure out who the [jInts] were the first time I heard that
on the radio--sounds like a Kiwi referring to the little boys' room.
