It's the lower-mid back open rounded vowel for which  "[open-o]" is about
the best you can do in ASCII.  Since there wasn't a neater ASCII
approximation, I avoided IPA entirely and settled for the common
orthographic representation of it.  In other words, the true, real, genuine
pronunciation rhymes with "haw haw," whereas the pronunciation favored by
today's clueless youth rhymes with "ha ha."

It seems clear to me that the cot-caught merger that now, tragically,
contaminates the speech of young  Northwesterners has come in since my own
youth.
