the + highway number

Some time ago ADS-L had a thread on how people in Los Angeles referred to
highways with a definite article, e.g. "the I-5".

I just got a letter from a friend who moved to Pennsylvania last  month.  He
was born circa 1950, is I think a native Angeleno, and if not  has definitely
lived in Los Angeles for at least 30 years before moving to  Pennsylvania.
Giving me the address of his new house, he added "We are  right off the 45".
