Rain

When I first heard the expression, "hit on," ca.1953, it had the
longer form, "I'm going to hit on her and see whether she'll come in
out the rain." There's a blues by Robert Johnson that opens with a
line something like, "You better come on in this kitchen, 'cause it's
going to be raining outdoors."

The first phrase is basically giberish, with no meaning obvious to the
unhip. The second phrase is pefectly meaningful, but it has no
connection with the rest of the song.

For decades, I've wondered what's up with these apparently empty
mentions of rain(ing). Was there once a slang connection between rain
and sex? Such a connection is not unknown in the history of
personkind.
