Fwd: interesting turn for "hoi polloi"

Conventional wisdom is that one refers to "hoi polloi", not "the hoi
polloi".

Given that some users are splitting "hoi" and "polloi", it's
interesting to see that the examples previously quoted refer to "the
hoi" and "the polloi".

I wonder if anyone's merging the conventional wisdowm (no use of the
word "the") with the separation (of "hoi" and "polloi") - and hence
ending up with just "hoi" and "polloi"!
