  Regardless, the attribution of the scrapbook to a famous person like Dodgson also strikes me as suspicious, as well as the fact that the prostitute he supposedly gave it to (You say her name was "Horly" ? ! ) managed to preserve it and pass it down to us, without, apparently, even Dodgson's most recent biographers getting wind of it.

  Dodgson would, unfortunately, make an ideal subject for this sort of fraud.

And for English, OED has now found an 1880 example, in (of
course) _The Pearl_. Antedatings welcome.
