1. A crisp biscuit baked in the form of a knot and  flavoured with salt; used 
esp. by Germans as a relish with beer. Also  fig. and attrib.

At Fastnacht, or carnival, they make what they call  Fassen-bretzel, or 
Fasching-pratvel. It is like a serpent with two heads rolled  into a circle; which 
is eaten in families during that time, and is a sort of  unleavened bread.
