Origin of cliche

I'm trying to find the origin of the phrase "Hot enough for you?"
Through the help of a fellow newspaper librarian I've gotten back to F.
Scott Fitzgerald's use of it in "The Great Gatsby," but he seems clearly
to be quoting what is already a cliche. Does anyone know the origin of
this trite weather comment?
