There was a prominent article about the phenomenon of male
nannies, including the use of the word, in an article in
the N.Y. Times's Style section in November 2002; I think there
was a Friends episode at the time featuring Freddie Prinze Jr.
as a manny. I seem to recall this article as popularizing the
term, at least as something to be discussed.
