Many of those "Repugs" are undoubtedly due to erroneous keystrokes.

"Repug(s)" and "Repuglican(s)" go back to 1994 in the Usenet archive.
A watershed year in partisan politics, what with the GOP taking
control of Congress, the Contract With America, the ascension of
Limbaugh, etc.
