to protest = to "engage in a political demonstration for or against"

Fox News on Monday reported the weekend immigration demonstrations by saying that "Thousands Protest the Rights of Lawbreakers !"

  What they meant was that the protesters were demonstrating *for* the so-called "rights of lawbreakers."

  This usage seems to be getting more common on TV news.  I first noticed it within the past five years.
