FWIW, the Orwell quote is in the OED, which renders a bit
foolish both Safire's big "1947" discovery a few weeks
ago and the heroic discovery of the Orwell quote by the
political historian (or whatever) in this week's column.

We have Barry's antedating on file, and Fred's as well.
