1995 C. L. Crumley, in Bettina Arnold & D. Blair Gibson _Celtic Chiefdom, Celtic State: The Evolution of Complex Social Systems in Prehistoric Europe_ (Cambridge: C.U.P.) 26: The folksong "Betsy from Pike" encodes the subsistence strategy of many who took part in the American westward expansion. Betsy...took animals likely to be useful either along the route or in establishing herself in a new farming community. In this paper I follow Hubert (1934) and suggest that Betsy's strategy is an aphorism for that of later Iron Age Celtic peoples who also drew on elements of a mature, temperate European subsistence strategy.
