POLITICS (POLI+TICS)
...
I don't know if either Fred or Grant included this line in either of their
political books. Kinky Friedman, in last night's debate for Texas Governor,
said that the word "politics" comes from "poly" (meaning "many") and "tics"
(meaning "blood-sucking parasites").
...
It's an old folk etymology that's incorrect, of course.

7 October 2006, Austin American-Statesman, section G (Life & Arts), pg. G1:
Going on outside the game is, of course, the State Fair of Texas, where you
can find all manner of original ways to clog your arteries. New this year are
the deep-fried cosmopolitan, fried avocados, fried mac 'n' cheese, fried
pralines, fried pancake sundae and, our favorite, fried Coke: "Smooth spheres of
Coca-Cola-flavored batter are deep fried, drizzled with pure Coke fountain
syrup, topped with whipped cream, cinnamon sugar and a cherry. Served in
souvenir contoured glasses."
