I've heard that joke (1972) as

Q. "What Massachusetts governor was named after three Massacusetts towns?"

A. "Endicott, Peabody, and Marblehead."

The governor's actual name was Endicott Peabody.

FWIW, around these parts, Peabody is pronounced "PEE-biddy."
