Has First Mention's take on the whole nine yards been seen before? Has it
been pre-pooh-poohed? As he says, it may be a wild-ass guess, but there
seems no denying his 1855 cite of the phrase unless he just totally made the
whole thing up, which seems unlikely.

I was interested to discover a web site called firstmention.com. An
Internet researcher named David Sarokin has created this site, with pages
for two dozen terms presenting the earliest citations he has found for each
term, mostly derived from Google News Archive searches. He doesn't seem to
use the ADS-L archives, and uses the OED only spottily, but he does have
some antedatings of OED.
