Here we seem to have a veritable transitional form (Goak):

  1919 Sec'y of the Navy Josephus Daniels, in John Gilbert Thompson & Inez Bigwood _Winning a Cause_ (Boston: Silver Burdett & Co.) 49: United States marines, bare chested, shouted their battle cry of "E-e-e-e-e y-a-a-h-h-h-yip!" charged straight into the murderous fire from those guns, and won!

  The reference is to the battle of Belleau Wood, June 6, 1918.
