Getting back to the original question, we USAians "take" a lot of activity
nouns: not only excretion but

   - breath
   - break
   - walk, stroll
   - drive, trip
   - guess
   - flyer
   - ...

Somebody *must* have studied these!

I noticed the UK/US have/take parallelism in chapter 35 of _Harry Potter &
the Deathly Hallows_. (No spoilers here.)

   - "And you knew this? You knew -- all along?"
   - "I guessed. But my guesses have usually been good."
   - "There's more to it. Why did [REDACTED :-) ]?"
   - "As to that, I cannot be sure."
   - "Have a guess, then."
