Popes and potatoes

I obviously made a mistake here. If my memory is correct, Spanish "papas viejas" would mean 'old potatoes', not "old popes". What is odd is that nouns ending in -a are usu. feminine.

I wrote:
"the pope is described with the feminine form of the adjective"
