OED has a single ex. from 1785.

1930 "Anonymous" [? John Jacob Niles] _One Woman's War_ (N.Y.: Macauley) 175: Sergeant Carson...said...he had been observing the fine qualities of females ever since Adam was an oakum boy. That's supposed to be an awfully long time in the British Army. He also told me he was by rights a "fly slicer" - a cavalryman.

The "Adam" proverb is in Partridge but not in OED.
