Not really relevant, but back in the late 1970's I heard the following story, about a professor in the Soviet Union who taught English stylistics.  She was complaining that Soviet restrictions kept her from reading and hearing real English, with the result "I thought the English word for davenport was pronounced like the trainer of a baseball team."
