I apologize if Fred's already nailed this one.  It is sometimes attributed to Bertrand Russell, more often to Anonymous.

  Here's what I find in my personal library of forgotten fiction:

  1945 Peter Bowman _Beach Red_ (N.Y.: Random House) 106: Battle doesn't determine who is right. Only who is left.

  _Beach Red_ was chosen as a co-selection of the Book-of-the-Month Club for November, 1945, so lots of people read it.  It seems inevitable that "war" should have replaced "battle."
