the spellchecker on my Word for the Mac is fine with "screed" but
doesn't have "prescriptivists" in its dictionary.  and of course it
rejects "sociolingusitic" (though "sociolinguistic" is fine).

"lingusitic" gets 16,300 raw google hits.  it's a *really* common
spelling error.
