an innovation?

I received a message this week from a student about an upcoming class
presentation in which she requested more time because she and her
collaborator had obtained more responses than expected and now "have
to do a lot of work sparsing out patterns" in the data.   Is anyone
familiar with this, or willing to guess where it might have come
from?  Maybe "parse" + something?  Or am I missing a more obvious
source?
