Use of Gaelic by Irish immigrants to the U.S., early 19th century?

There is an article on the Irish in NYC in The Multilingual Apple: Languages in New York City, edited by Ofelia García & Joshua A. Fishman. 2nd ed. with a new foreword. Berlin & New York: Mouton de Gruyter, 2002. My recollection of this is that it says that the evidence that the Irish in NYC spoke Irish is remarkably scanty, although it's certain that they must have done so. I have a few nice anecdotes from the 1820s about Irish speakers.
