I know, I know, it's sophomoric, but anyway: 
 
Sir James G. Frazer, Pausanias’s Description of Greece (London: Macmillan, 1895), V, p.53: “Athenaeus says ([Deipnosophists,] xiii. p. 561) that the Lacedaemonians sacrificed to Love before an engagement, and that in Crete also sacrifices were regularly offered before a battle to Love by the handsomest men in the army dressed in gay attire.”
