whizzbang, hot shop

OED restricts the meaning of "whizz-bang" to a high-velocity _German_ shell, but usage varied:
 
1916-17 Bernard Adams _Nothing of Importance_ (London: Methuen) 124: Then Trafalgar 
Square has been rather a hot shop: two of our own whizz-bangs fell short there, and several rifle grenades fell very close. 
 
"Hot shop" is not in OED, though Adams uses it a number of times.
