Lieutenant

[Michael Quinion]

Can anybody point me to a detailed discussion of the reasons for the
differing US and UK pronunciations of "lieutenant"? It's a question that
keeps coming up. Some elaboration of the OED's explanation would be
useful, not least in regard to the dating of the shift in the US.
