Some of the old folks on this list may recall an article from 1960 entitled

'A Model and an hypothesis for language structure' by Victor Yngve arguing against Chomsky's infinity claims. (reference here: https://dspace.mit.edu/bitstream/1721.1/4453/1/RLE-TR-369-06411244.pdf)

In any case, as a young whippersnapper undergraduate in 1970 I read a copy in the University of Toronto Linguistics library that had been through Martin Joos' hands first, and he had written in the margin 'whoever wrote this must have had a tin ear'.
