"practices"

I just returned from an academic conference in California, where one scholarly paper included the phrase "processes and practices." The speaker used what seems to have become the prestige (academic) pronunciation of "processes" as [pros at siz], with tertiary stress on the final syllable. Then, perforce, he paralleled that pronunciation with "practices" as [praeKt at siz]!
