OED has 1. 1839 quote for "self-igniting cigar or match" and 2. 1837 quote for
"...'Equal Rights' or Radical section of the Democratic party ..." with a
note that "The name was given in 1835..."

ADS-L archive has 1835 quotes for both senses from Barry Popik and Ben Zimmer.
