The fact that there exist shoddy e-mail clients that silently alter
the content of messages seems like a good reason for the people using
them to upgrade to smarter ones, like gmail, which can even forward
incoming messages to your favorite shoddy e-mail client, just in case
you need to satisfy that pack-rat tendency to keep that shoddy client
just in case.

Of course there may be the occasional person in a compromised
situation, but those situations would have to be thought out on a
case-by-case basis.
