on the day

Does anyone know the origin of "on the day," as in Rodriguez had three
singles on the day ? I'm not sure if it's confined to baseball, but there it's
ubiquitous. Someone sugggested that it's vintage Howard Cosell, but I can't
come up with a definitive citation.
