OT high top boots

The recent comments on high top boots with the knife pocket reminded me
of how much I wanted a pair as a child and how thankful I was of a heavy
snow so I could wear them.  But my question is why were they so popular,
certainly a hotter item than Nike's or Addidis are today? A web search
provided no information as to the reason for their popularity, anyone
have any memories, a radio program a movie western?
Just idle curiousity
